Qumrun, the changemaker of Topsia

By Shafkat Alam | Joint Secretary

Qumrun, a daughter of a single mother. Her father left them when qumrun was still very young. She cant recall her father's face. But her mother Tabassum worked day and night to keep the family moving. She has one younger brother and a granny. Tabassum is a ladies tailor by profession and earns a small income which makes it difficult for her mother to run the household. She lives in Topsia beside the canal-sewage (the city waste water flows beside the house). Because of Tiljala SHED untiring support which came from GlobalGiving, Qumrun completed her schooling and now working in a reputed Hospitality group Hotel Desovrani Group of Hotels which is located in the tech hub of Kolkata Metopolitan and earning a salary more than her mother. Tiljala SHED connected her with the CEO of the group. After an interview was arranged at the employers place, Qumrun was instantly selected due to her good communication skills which she has been receiving at the Tiljala SHED learning centres.

Tiljala SHED also work on the development of the soft skills of the students so that they can face any such challenges in their lives. This is a moment of pride for Qumrun and her entire family. First, she did her 1 month on job training at the Hotel and is now receiving a good salary of Rs.10,000 (US$ 125).

She is the first girl in her family to complete the school and also the first female to go out and work in a private sector. She is a role model in her community and many will follow her footsteps. She has received intense training at her workplace which is sharpening her skills and will go a long way in the coming years. Very soon we will hear about the promotion of Qumrun as she has already received an appraisal from the CEO. Children like Qumrun, who have faced severe financial challenges in their lives are ought to go beyond the barriers to make a difference and become financially independent in their lives.
