The 2024 closing of our intervention with children and adolescents in Chiapas strengthened identity processes as indigenous and working children, with the strength to raise their voices and demand their rights.
The last three months of the year saw changes in government in the country, with the local government of San Cristóbal de las Casas and the state government in Chiapas beginning to criminalize working children, ignoring the cultural, family, personal and economic value that it means for girls and boys to collaborate with their families in work. According to the reality of local violence, Melel identifies decent work as a projection factor in the recruitment of girls, boys and adolescents.
Education and access to decent work are some tools to prevent risk situations for them, however, it is necessary to reflect more on the issue among adults. For this reason, on December 9, we held a local meeting of working children, with the aim of sharing their thoughts on “why they work” and “how they can improve their work and play spaces”, as well as learning to organize and demand respect for their rights.
We invite you to follow us on our social networks @melelxojobal and learn much more about our work.
On behalf of the entire Melel Xojobal team, we wish you a Happy New Year 2025, and we also appreciate your constant solidarity for this project, we hope to be able to count on it again this year.
Our best wishes to you and yours.
Thank you.
