Teacher training workshop
Thank you very much for making a difference for children in Cape Town, South Africa, by supporting ORT SA CAPE's food and education programmes! We are so grateful that you contributed towards this project through CHW's page on GlobalGiving.
A special thank you to each person who made a donation, and to those who shared this project, during GlobalGiving's recent July Bonus Day campaign.
Below is an update from Bev at ORT SA CAPE on how your kindness been making a difference:
--------
"In July, our Mandela Day initiative saw 51 people who work in soup kitchens and ECD [Early Childhood Development] centres attending a workshop on the importance of nutrition in young children. A registered dietitian spoke about how to ensure healthy food choices and our team presented a session on basic nutrition and its link to brain development. We also show cased delicious, nutritious meals made from the ingredients found in our food parcels that we distribute every month. The day also coincided with our July food relief distribution.
Mandela Day this year marked the 10th anniversary of Madiba's [Nelson Mandela's] passing in December 2013.The Nelson Mandela Foundation has themed their 10-year remembrance with the call to action "The Legacy Lives on Through You".
Our teacher training courses continue to inspire educators and are geared at helping them prepare their learners for the future. Since January we have trained 1365 teachers across our various short courses, reaching over 40,000 pupils. Donations given by CHW's supporters went towards teacher training workshops held on 16th , 17th June 2023, 21st , 22nd and 28th July 2023. The workshops focussed on various topics, such as Lego, Coding and Perceptual Skills.
South Africa's youth unemployment rate is dire and we believe that ''unemployment is everyone's problem''. At ORT SA CAPE we are addressing this through various youth employment initiatives. Guiding and mentoring young people as they embark on a year-long work experience programme as well as offering them the opportunity to obtain a Level 4 ECD [Early Childhood Development] qualification through our learnership programme. Currently we have 130 youth enrolled on our learnership and a further 405 are part of our YES [Youth Employment Service] initiative.
Collaborations and partnerships have contributed to our success this year. These have enabled us to reach more beneficiaries as well reaching a more diverse group of beneficiaries. We are working towards cementing these partnerships as well as looking at new opportunities to work with like-minded organisations.
The team at a centre and children's home which receives food supplies from ORT SA CAPE said: "Your donation of food parcels is an enormous relief on our food budget and we are extremely grateful for this generosity. Please convey our thanks to everyone... who is part of this."
The on-going support from CHW, allows us to offer more opportunities to our beneficiaries, changing more lives through education. Thank you for the support of our organisation.
