Dear friend and supporter,
We have just finished an exciting time of selecting Teachers from the villages to teach at the new centers launching in June. The selections began in March and were based on a well-defined process. After a market survey of the size of the villages, number of families, size of families in the village and income levels, villages were shortlisted. This was followed by a rigorous marketing process in the shortlisted villages through local radio, TV channels, and word of mouth, to spread the information regarding the opportunity to be a teacher with HLC. Over 1300 young local women went through the initial written testing. The women who passed were assessed by the Field staff to see if they fitted the HLC criteria and their suitability for the job. The next round of testing focused on assessing the candidate’s ability to manage a class and an interview with Senior Management.
What is the profile of these women who are joining us as teachers?
Prafulla is young woman from Kadiluvagilu village in Mandya District who on finishing school wanted to study more and work. But as per local custom and against her wishes, she was married soon after she finished her schooling. She was not happy and never imagined that she would be able to find a good job locally with just a school degree. Being selected as a Kindergarten teacher by Hippocampus Learning Centers has given her the hope of creating a better life for herself and the opportunity to work in her own village and to be trained in a profession by a well-known organization.
Sheelama from Kunduru village in Davangere is also delighted to find employment with just a school degree. She has been selected as a KG Teacher and she has also enrolled her little son in the Kindergarten. Her training has started; she is excited with the learning and says she feels like a different person everyday with the training she is receiving.
It’s an exciting time ahead for us too as we train the teachers in the many aspects of managing the Centers as well as the curriculum and the materials used in teaching. 31 of the 275 teachers selected this year are young college students who see a great opportunity to be trained as a teacher as well to earn the money to pay for their education. Many are local housewives who did not think they would have an opportunity to be teachers in their own village. They are delighted with the opportunity to make a difference both in their own lives and in the educational standards of the children in their villages.
Spaces have been carefully selected and we are now in preparation to open Centers in 86 villages in the Districts of Mandya and Davangere in Karnataka. A big leap! And every one of these 86 villages will run both a Kindergarten and a Primary education Center giving a child in the village 5 to 6 years to be part of our centers and experience a fun and meaningful way of learning.
Thank you again for your support which makes this possible,
