For a child with a disability, going to school can mean overcoming barriers that many children never have to think about. Over the past three months, ChildCare Foundation has continued supporting vulnerable children with disabilities and their families in Jinja and neighboring communities, helping children access education, learning materials and other essential support. We have also continued following up with families to understand the difficulties affecting school attendance and to encourage children to remain in education.
The reality on the ground is not always easy. Many families we work with are already struggling to meet their basic needs and the additional costs associated with disability can make education even harder to sustain. Some children need school materials, healthcare, protection or other forms of assistance that their families cannot easily afford. We also face the challenge of having more children in need than the resources currently available to us can reach. This means that we sometimes have to prioritize the most urgent cases while continuing to look for ways to support others.
The reason we continue is simple: a disability should never be the reason a child is denied the opportunity to learn. When a child receives the materials they need, returns to school, participates in class or receives support for a health or protection concern, that is meaningful progress. We have also seen how important it is to work with parents and communities because inclusion is not only about getting children through the school gate; it is about helping them feel safe, valued and able to participate.
The support of GlobalGiving donors makes this work possible. Your contributions help us respond to practical barriers that can otherwise keep children with disabilities away from school. There is still much more need than we can currently meet but every child we help remain in school is a reminder of why this work matters.
We are committed to continuing this journey with the children, families and communities we serve and to share their progress with the people who make this work possible.
