In this quarter (September to November), Prajayatna has focused on providing onsite support to teachers to ensure that they are able to implement different aspects that have been covered by the trainings that were conducted in the previous quarter. This was done by visiting the Centres and supporting the teachers to conduct the learning activities and guiding them when they had doubts or required new ideas for facilitation of learning concepts.
Post these visits; there has been gradual improvement in the teachers’ engagement with children. Teachers have been trying out new methods and activities to make the learning process more interesting for children. Games, rhymes, stories that were learnt during the trainings have been introduced to the children, making learning more fun.
It has been observed that cleanliness both within an outside the anganwadi centres has improved and the centres were being maintained better. Punctuality of the children and teachers was an issue before and it is now gradually being addressed through the visits to the Centres and interactions with parents, teachers & assistant teachers. Teachers have also started working on mobilizing resources required for basic amenities in the centres by enlisting the support of local community members and elected representatives.
Trainings have been continued for teachers and Parents Committees as per plan. In the latest training that was organized, all the teachers from the 50 anganwadi centres had participated. A review of the Centre after the previous training was done where the teachers shared their learning and challenges faced. In the meeting, the facilitator shared some of the observations that were made during the visits to the Centres, with all teachers. It was realized that the teachers still require support in understanding aspects related to learning such as mapping of concepts and defining of learning outcomes for children and planning activities accordingly. In the training session, the facilitator supported the teachers by taking various examples and asking teachers to work on them in groups and then present to the entire group so that they could get suggestions and new ideas. They were then asked to make a sample lesson plan for a week in order to help them think of suitable activities.
In addition to the teacher trainings, Prajayatna has also provided trainings for the anganwadi supervisors. All trainings conducted have been attended by key officials of the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD) such as the Child Development Programme Officer (CDPOs) and Assistant CDPOs.
Apart from the training, meetings were held with the Parents Committee members. Few elected representatives were also present at these sessions. Several aspects related to anganwadi management, children’s health, learning and nutrition have been addressed in all anganwadis subsequent to these meetings.
In Marasandra anganwadi in Yelahanka block where Prajayatna has been working, several developments have been enabled through the trainings that have been conducted. This anganwadi is located in Arekere Gram Panchayat of Yelahanka Block. A total of 30 children are enrolled to this centre and it has a regular attendance of 27 to 28 children. There are a few children in this anganwadi whose parents have migrated from Northern states of India and from Andhra Pradesh.
The teacher Alavelamma, assistant teacher Jayamma from Marasandra Anganwadi and the parents’ committee members had attended the trainings organized by Prajayatna.
Both teachers and parents have been actively working towards addressing the requirements of the anganwadi centre. Initially the parents committees were not involved with planning and neither did they meet regularly. The members used to sign the register and leave instead of conducting a meeting or discussing with other members. Now they conduct regular meetings, plans have been made and they review the implementation of the plans. In one of the parents meetings, the committee members had discussed about addressing the leakage of the roof of the anganwadi building. As per their plan, they had submitted a request to the District Panchayat President – Srimathi Vani Vishwanth who had promised to address their requirement either directly or through the Taluk Panchayat.
