Scholarship Amid Mathare's Devastating Floods

By Mercy Kamau | Programs Manager

Mathari Children Fund Panairobi continue to provide school scholarships to vulnerable children in Mathare and surrounding areas. Currently, the program supports 87 students across various educational levels:

- 29 in primary school

- 13 in junior secondary

-  26 in secondary school (8-4-4 system)

-  14 in technical and vocational skills training colleges

-  5 in universities

On Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, a devastating flood disaster struck Mathare, impacting numerous residents near the Mathare Valley. The floodwaters swept away homes and possessions, leaving many without basic essentials . Among the affected were families of the school scholarship beneficiaries at MCFP. Some families had to swim to safety as their houses were rapidly submerged. Tragically, government authorities later demolished the houses near the Mathare River, displacing many and leaving them with no shelter options. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/may/07/floods-kenya-

This report highlight on the devastating impact of the flooding on one of MCFP  beneficiary.  Aluko, a beneficiary of MCFP school scholarship, along with her siblings Kabudah, Asweeto, Malaika, and Mumji, found themselves homeless after their family house was swept away by the floods. As orphans, they live with their elderly and ailing grandmother, their only caretaker in these challenging times. The flooding not only left them homeless but also deprived them of basic necessities like school uniforms and books. Their precarious living situation near the Mathare River made them highly susceptible to such disasters.

During the fateful night Aluko and her siblings were away visiting their grandmother's friend hence they did not experience the tragic incidence . However, their grandmother was trapped until a group of courageous volunteers rescued her. The family, like many affected community members, sought shelter in public schools and churches.

As schools prepared to reopen post-April holidays, Aluko and his  siblings faced a setback, having lost their school uniforms and learning materials. Grateful for the support from our donors, MCFP stepped in, providing new uniforms and essential supplies, ensuring Aluko and his siblings could go back to school and continue with their  education.

MCFP's relief efforts extend beyond the Aluko family, offering immediate support to affected families with necessities like food, sanitary pads and clothing. Through MCFP scholarships, children like Aluko and his siblings receive school fees, uniforms, books, and learning materials. A heartfelt thank you to all our donors for their continuous support in positively impacting the lives of these children and their families.

The Mathare Children’s Fund Panairobi invites more well-wishers to join us in transforming the lives of underprivileged children from Mathare's slums by contributing to our sponsorship fund. Your generous donations play a crucial role in providing quality education and a brighter future for these children. Supporting MCFP ensures that children affected by disasters, such as the Mathare 4A flooding, receive the necessary aid to continue their education and rebuild their lives.

Let's come together to support families like Aluko's during these difficult times
