Impact of education scholarship on less fortunate children from informal settlement

By Mercy Muthoni Kamau | Programs Manager

THE STORY OF MKOBE

My name is Mkobe. I live in Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi Kenya and I am a refugee from Democratic Republic of Congo. I have been one of the lucky beneficiaries of MCFPanairobi scholorship program since 2018. When I scored 417 marks out of 500 in my Kenya certificate of Primary education (KCPE), I was very excited about my excellent performance but at the same time worried about the cost associated in joining my dream secondary school, Maranda High, one of the best performing schools in  Kenya. My parent could not afford my secondary education and I feared that my aspiration of becoming a medical doctor would be shattered.

Through a community leader, I was linked up to MCFPanairobi where I was enrolled as one of beneficiary for the school scholarship program. This enabled me join Maranda High school, my dream school! During the four years of my secondary education, MCFPanairobi paid all my school fees and provided all the necessary materials that facilitated my learning. Over the school holidays, MCFpanairobi provided library facility where i accessed books and  resources that facilitated my learning in a great way. Further, the organization occasionally provided food support to my family especially when my parents were not able to get casual jobs which are our main source of income. The support from MCFPanairobi kept me focused and motivated to excel in my studies as I knew that if I performed well and landed on my dream job, I will be able to change the economic situation of my family.

After four years of my study at the secondary school, I scored a B+ grade that provided me I direct entry to the university to undertake a clinical medicine course. I am very excited as i am certain that my dreams are becoming true. I will be joining university in September this year where I plan to work hard and graduate as a medical doctor.   I will always be grateful to MCFPanairobi for the education opportunity they have granted me, despite the fact I am a refugee from a different country. I express my gratitude to MCFPanairobi and its donors. I will definitely come back as alumnae to support more children access formal education once I become financially stable.

WHAT WE DO

MCFPanairobi provides scholarship support to children hailing from less fortunate household in Nairobi informal settlement and with no financial ability to support their children undergo formal educationm like Mkobe. Our targets beneficiaries are vulnerable children who may not have access to education if not provided scholorship. Our scholarships entails school fees, books, uniform, shopping, pocket money and transport to and from school.

This year, MCFP is providing full scholarship to 77 vulnerable children who hail from Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi Kenya. The children are at different levels of their formal education ranging from special schools, kindergarten, primary schools, secondary schools, university/colleges.This has been possible due to generous donations from the GlobalGiving community.

To continue supporting  more vulnerable children undergo formal educations, MCFPanairobi is kindly requesting for donations from the GlobalGiving Community. We believe that eduaction is a direct path for improving livelihood among urban poor communities and protecting the rights of childern.
