Meet Zainabu graduates

By Titus Mwangi | Project Leader

My graduation Day
My graduation Day

My name is Zainabu and I am 6 years old. I may be small in age, but I have so much on my mind that it weighs me down sometimes but today am so excited because for once today, it is all about me!!!

Today I GRADUATE and I will be joining class 1 (1st grade) after a year in kindergarten in 2017. It all started when I was recruited by MCFpanairobi in November 2015 in the sponsorship programme. In January 2016, I was taken to St. James Model Academy where I have been since. Allow me to briefly share my life with you because I think I have lived a full circle than most will but AM NOT GIVING UP, NO AM NOT!

It all started when I was two and a half years old living in Kiamaiko slums in Nairobi, a crime hot spot because of the proliferation of illegal weapons, the supermarket of illegal guns in Nairobi they say. I remember my mum coming home drunk one evening and hitting me with a cooking pot asking me and my siblings to leave the house because my “dad” needed her attention for the evening or else we would not be eating the next day. This I understood happened from the time I was born but being hit by the pot brought me from my childhood fantasy to the real world. I hated it, I hated it, i hated it, i hated sleeping outside and usually would cry myself to sleep while my sister held me tight. My grandmother who lived near our room would take me in at times when it suited her but she also was drunk almost every day. My best friend, my sister left at one point and I later came to know she could not stand my mum marrying her off at night to her male friends and up to now I do not know where she went to. I miss her sometimes but I do not really remember her very well. I have gone through other many things but hey am not here to talk about my past which I believe will NOT define my life, I have moved on since then and have started a new life. I have you to thank for it. Am in school, I have new friends and I love everything about it. I still get sad at times and have strange emotional meltdowns, BUT at least I know I have a good life and that I couldn't ask for more!

I promise you that I will work hard and get a good life for me and help my siblings and all the children who are unfortunate to be born in the slums and difficult situations around the world.

But today, please join me in celebrating my graduation day. Thank you, thank you again. (Zainabu, October 2016)
