Smiles Forever wants to thank Global Giving for the amazing founding campaigns organized during this year and the opportunity for our supporters to donate safely.
Our system and work protocols dictate that we recall patients every 6 months to re – evaluate their dental status, once all of their dental work is completed. This allows us to evaluate factors such as home care techniques (use of the toothbrush, dental floss and toothpicks). The dental status of each patient is evaluated according to number of new caries and increase in dental plaque percentages.
In order to attack these issues we reinforce the education using more didactic methods focused for children. Thanks to our strategic partnership with “The Tooth Fairies Program” we use a fun and friendly character “The Tooth Fairy” to encourage home care techniques. We explain what caries is and its process through colorful posters as well as a large soft tooth with “tooth bugs.” We also include proper nutrition to prevent dental disease and tooth decay. The scheduled visits are not only directed to the children, but caretakers, staff, teachers and all members of the organization. It’s essential that they participate to receive the same message and reinforce it on a daily basis.
The results are more than awesome. Due to our visits to the different shelters, homes, and organizations (37 in all) that we work with, new cavities are under control and plaque percentages have been reduced by 73 % The children enjoy participating and we love to do it for them.
