INTRODUCTION
East Pokot is a region in Kenya that faces significant economic and social challenges, including high levels of poverty and food insecurity. This has had a direct impact on the education of children in the region, as malnutrition and poor nutrition can hinder their physical and mental development, and has a direct impact on their ability to learn and succeed in the classroom.
Based on our previous project “Food For Education” Hifadhi Africa had a positive impact on how a school feeding program can be crucial in the education of children. We therefore decided to expand our reach to other needy schools within East Pokot.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FOOD FOR EDUCATION IN EAST POKOT
In East Pokot, many children come to school hungry and lacking the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development. This can have a significant impact on their ability to learn, concentrate, and succeed in the classroom. Nutritious food also has a positive impact on children's mental health and academic performance. A healthy diet has been linked to improved focus, concentration, and memory, as well as reduced stress and anxiety. This is particularly important for children during the school day, when they need to be alert and focused in the classroom.
BENEFICIARY SCHOOLS
The schools that benefited from this feeding program include: Chesakam Primary and ECD school, Nabukut Primary and ECD school and Akwichatis Primary and ECD school. Each school received 100 kilograms of maize, 100kilograms of beans, 100kilograms of salt and 90 kilograms of porridge flour. A total of 745 students benefited from this school feeding program by HAO.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, food is an essential component of education, and addressing the nutritional inequalities faced by students in East Pokot is critical for their future prospects and the development of the region as a whole. By working together to provide nutritious meals, educate families about healthy eating habits, and improve access to nutritious food options, it is possible to make a positive difference in the lives of students in the region.
