44% of girls in Kenya don't finish high school. The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) provides a free high school education to 150 girls every year in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Our impactful model cares for the whole girl - lunches, sanitary pads, health care, social worker, boarding, mentors and extracurricular activities - providing everything she needs to thrive and graduate from high school. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa with high rates of unemployment, poverty, overcrowding and insecurity. Many homes don't have reliable access to water, electricity or sanitation. Girls in Kibera encounter gender based violence, are often married off for a dowry and lack autonomy over their bodies. 44% of Kenyan girls don't finish high school and 23% have a child before they are 18. KGSA helps girls overcome these challenges.
KGSA is a small, impactful school that has added programs through the years to respond to girls' needs such as school meals, college scholarships, job skills, sanitary pads, a social worker, health care, etc. KGSA is more than a school; it's a community, family and home. For many girls, it's the first time they've been encouraged to challenge traditional gender roles and take ownership of their bodies and future.
Since 2009, 412 girls have graduated from KGSA putting them on the path for a brighter future. We know that when girls have the opportunity to pursue and graduate from high school they 1) Can earn 2X as much as their peers; 2) Are less likely to get pregnant or married as a teenager; 3) Are more likely to have improved health and wellbeing into adulthood; and 4) Are less likely to have a child die from malnutrition or suffer from stunting. This is the power of the girl effect!
