Educate to Empower: Supporting Children in Crisis

Project Report | Jun 23, 2026
Progress report

By Akila John Jatau | CEO/Founder

SUMMARY
Since our last report, Buhknom Development Foundation (BDF) has continued the Educate to Empower initiative despite funding challenges. We focused on providing educational materials, school support, and learning opportunities for children in crisis-affected or vulnerable communities in  Kaduna state and surrounding areas. These efforts aim to reduce dropout rates, improve learning outcomes, and build a brighter future for children facing economic hardship, displacement, or family crises.

ACTIVITIES COMPLETED
Educational Support: Distributed school supplies (books, notebooks, uniforms, and writing materials) to approximately 75 children in primary and secondary schools.

Tuition and Fees Assistance: Supported school fees and exam registration for 35 vulnerable children, particularly orphans and those from widow-headed households.

After-School and Mentorship Programs: Organized remedial classes, literacy/numeracy sessions, and life-skills mentoring for 50 children, emphasizing resilience and personal development.

Community Outreach: Conducted awareness sessions with parents and guardians on the importance of education and identified additional children in need within communities in Kaduna state areas.

IMPACT
These interventions have helped keep children in school and improved their academic performance and confidence. Many parents reported that their children are now more engaged in learning and motivated to attend school regularly. One beneficiary mother shared: “Thanks to the support, my daughter can now attend classes with the right materials. She is excited about school again and dreams of becoming a teacher.” The project continues to support dozens of children, contributing to long-term empowerment and breaking cycles of poverty in crisis-prone areas.

CHALLENGES
Severe funding limitations restricted the number of children we could reach and delayed expansion of the program. Rising costs of educational materials and transportation to remote communities also posed difficulties.

NEXT STEPS
Scale up distribution of learning materials and tuition support to reach at least 50–70 more children in the coming quarter.
Partner with local schools and organizations for sustained after-school programs and vocational training for older children.
Document success stories with photos and conduct a simple evaluation of learning outcomes.
Intensify fundraising efforts to reactivate full project visibility and impact.
