Situation of Displaced Masters Students in Mizoram

By Amrita Paul | Consultant

Update on the Situation of Displaced Masters Students in Mizoram

A. Current Status

As of mid-September 2024, 14 students have been accepted to study at the university in Northeast India with support from SSG. Our current funding situation is as follows:

- 11 students: Full scholarships provided

- 3 students: Partial scholarships covering tuition fees only

Student Demographics

Total students: 14, of which 6 are men & 8 are women

Age range: 23-28 years old

Fields of study:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Political Science
  • Social Work
  • Economics

Funding Reallocation

To maximize the number of students gaining access to education, SSG has made the difficult decision to reallocate funds originally intended for:

1. Emergency healthcare

2. Educational resources (e.g., laptops)

These funds have been redirected to cover tuition fees for the maximum number of students possible.

B. Urgent Funding Needs

SSG is actively seeking additional funds to:

1. Upgrade the remaining 3 students to full scholarships

2. Reinstate funding for emergency healthcare

3. Provide essential educational resources

# Student Circumstances

- Many students have spent the past year in refugee camps

- This scholarship represents their sole opportunity for a better future

- The scholarship stipend provides crucial financial support

# Recent Challenges

  • Health Emergencies:

   - Two students were hospitalized with life-threatening illnesses in August and September

   - SSG staff covered hospital fees totaling USD 800

  •  Educational Resources:

   - All students require laptops for their studies

   - Cost per laptop: 23,000 Rupees (USD 275)

C. Call to Action

We urgently appeal for your support to ensure our students' safety, health, and access to essential educational resources. Every contribution, regardless of size, makes a significant impact on these students' lives and futures.

Your donation will directly support:

- Full scholarships for all students

- Emergency healthcare funds

- Essential educational resources

Thank you for your generosity and commitment to changing lives through education.
