Education That Keeps Families Together. Reducing rural emigration.
At Fundación Comunitaria Don Diego, we believe education is how we break the cycle of poverty — and how we give young people a real reason to build their future here, at home, instead of risking everything to cross a border.
In the rural community we serve, migration north is generational. Fathers leave and families are left behind. The reason is almost always the same: there are no well-paid jobs, and without education, the few doors that exist stay closed. We know young people from our community who have paid coyotes up to $10,000 USD and walked for days through the desert, risking their lives for the chance at a job. Some have been deported. Others never made it back at all.
This is why our after-school programs and high school completion support exist. And it is working: several of our students, who were seriously considering leaving, have chosen instead to stay and finish their studies — because for the first time, they can see a future in their own country.
Jonathan's story
Jonathan is 16. Last October, his father was deported from the United States and the whole family returned to our community. Jonathan came back with no belongings — and no school records. Without documents, his education was frozen, and at his age, the risk of dropping out for good was real.
Our team recovered his birth certificate, CURP, and primary school certificate, and built an accelerated study plan so he could certify his entire middle school in a single exam. In February, Jonathan took that exam — and passed. He is now a graduate, ready to continue.
Our commitment
At Fundación Comunitaria Don Diego, we don't just hand out certificates — we rebuild life plans. In this rural community, we are the bridge between young people's talent and the opportunities they deserve. We work every day to make sure no child or teenager has their future stopped by a missing document or a lack of resources.
Every student who stays in school is one more family that doesn't have to be torn apart.
"At Fundación Comunitaria Don Diego, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover their potential. We are committed to our community, today and always." — Juan Manuel Correa Cuellar, President
