New: Computer Lab and Curriculum

By Steve Lewis | Treasurer

As many of you will recall, we recently built a new boys' dorm. Since our last report, and thanks to the generosity of our donor community, we have transformed the old boys' dorm into a wonderful science and computer lab for our students.  This new lab will help our students thrive in an increasingly technological world.

We also wanted to report that the government of Kenya has introduced a new approach to high school admissions. In the old system, the Ministry of Education selected the high school students would attend based on their performance.  In the new system, the students and their teachers have been empowered to take a more active role.

The new system has the students select twelve different schools, three in each of the following categories - National schools, County schools, Extra-County schools, and Sub-County schools. Factors considered for placement within the schools selected by the students with guidance from their teachers include: (a)  Subject combination offered in the given school; (b)  school-based assessment report from previous grades; and (c) the final exam in grade nine known as Kenya Junior School Evaluation Assessment (KJSEA).

Overall, this new curriculum is an improvement as it provides the students, guided by our wonderful teaching staff, with more agency in their education.
