Project Report | Jan 3, 2018
A look back at 2017

By Jessica Lewis | Project Leader

Thank you for 9 great years!
Thank you for 9 great years!

As the new year kicks off, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on our achievements over the course of 2017.

We are very proud to report that we ranked 1st out of 137 schools in our district on national exams, which were held in November. This continues our track record as one of the top-performing schools in our district.

Additionally:

  • We supported 230 orphans and vulnerable children from preschool through 8th grade, including 125 girls.

  • After nine years of hard work and persistence in the face of technical, political, and financial hurdles, we brought a secure source of pumped water to campus! This supplements our rainwater harvesting system and eliminates the need for daily hikes down a steep ravine to a spring to collect water during dry seasons. We are also able to provide water to the health clinic, polytechnic school, and public primary school that share our hilltop.

  • We continue to expand financially self-sustaining activities in Kenya, including a business growing mushrooms on campus for sale to local restaurants and cultivating as much of our own food as possible to reduce costs and mitigate the risk of price increases.

As we prepare to begin our 10th school year, we would like to thank you for your continued support -- without you, none of this would be possible!

Please note that we are transitioning to a new GlobalGiving project page, available here (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/empower-orphans-in-kenya/). We'll continue to post project reports and keep you updated through that page. Thank you again!
