Why Claudine Chose Nursing

By Annette Scarpitta | Project Leader

Education was always a priority of Claudine, but after two years in the Rwenena Primary School, she had to leave because her widowed mother could no longer afford to pay fees. In 2011 under our predecessor, AMCAV, Claudine resumed her studies when school fees, uniforms, and materials were sponsored by GlobalGiving donors like you. That year, it became clear that Claudine's sheer determination - along with intelligence and academic success - would serve her well. Rwenena school authorities even advanced her one year early to the nearest secondary school in Luberizi (see map).

Claudine finished high school with final scores high enough to gain entry into a renowned university over the Congolese border in Bjujumbura, Burundi. Her passion for education remained intact. Although her earlier interest in journalism remained, Claudine decided instead to study nursing. She recognized the dire need for healthcare in rural communities like Rwenena.

Claudine is poised to begin her second year of study. Her first year was a challenge, but she studied relentlessly. Fortunately, she gained the support and mentorship of caring staff at her university. She has never wavered in her commitment to learning and to advance herself to a position where she can give back to communities like Rwenena, where she grew up. Now that I have had the good fortune of getting to know her better, I am struck by her unique mix of determination, gratitude, good nature, and sense of humor.
