At the beginning of the campaign, there was a leadership team that had not received any training yet on Community Organizing. Tatua Kenya supplemented the need for the leaders to have the skills on community organizing by constant coaching and provision of training support throughout the campaign. During the first community Forum the community decided that the children were not performing well in their education because they were not getting enough food during school hours and or at home, therefore could not concentrate in class. They also decided to tackle this challenge by starting a feeding program at the Matasia primary school and stretching to other schools within Matasia area.
After months of persistently and successfully strategizing on getting the feeding program running, the team of seven working with their community also began "Boresha Elimu- Education committee". This committee’s purpose was to work with the teachers to monitor the performance within the academic subject (mathematics, English, Kiswahili, social studies and science). This committee upon evaluating their campaign soon realized that though the result as per pupils’ performance had improved. This has been a win for the Matasia community as it means progress. However, performance on some subjects (specific teachers are in charge of) have either stagnated or dropped thus affecting the overall mean score of the school.
The Leadership team and the Boresha Elimu- Education committee are now working to mobilize the community mainly the parents, alumni, local education authority and local government authority to take action as per teachers that seem inefficient. Tatua is coaching the team towards taking an action that allows everyone to experience change rather than extinction in line as is in Tatua’s belief in transformational change. Teachers that are considered inefficient are given the opportunity to improve and experience the change with them as opposed to radical action to just get rid of them. As schools close for the April holiday, we have an opportunity to strategize, get more people to join the Matasia campaign and re-energize.
Thank you for all the support that you have given us as this amazing work would not be able to happen without you. Also a big thank you for those of you that have written to us with your thoughts, we greatly appreciate it. Looking forward to giving you an update on the progress of the campaign in a few months. Asante Sana! (Thank you very much).
