Rose and Jacob, Tatua Organizing Fellows in Ngong share about the change they've seen this year.
Our campaign in Ngong is improving the way children are being taken care of and provided for in the community. Through our work we know more parents are paying attention to less fortunate kids in the community. In the past six months, 529 community members have attended meetings about how to ensure their kids are educated and 230 parents are committed to weekly parent group meetings that are focused on education. Each of these parents has committed to getting 4 children in their neighborhood consistent education. So far, 72 children have been identified and 300 children attended forums which gave them a chance to share their needs around education.
Should our campaign reach its goal, then the lives of children and parents involved will be improved greatly. They would be able to improve tremendously the quality of education that children receive in public education; education being one of the key factor of improving livelihood identified by the community.
The first time we got into this community they could not see themselves starting anything or solving any problem without external assistance. “Yes we can do it if the NGOs come, if the government helps us ( Serikali tafadhali –Government please)” was the popular slogan, they were never talking about their own resources but as a result of the numerous one on one conversations and the group meetings we had during the campaign, we saw the community donate resources towards the campaign and host forums to discuss the challenges in their community and how they can solve them using local resources. People have given their time to host small task like organizing meetings, identifying the intended children, inviting people who are diverse with different skills have trained the community.
We have seen the community attend public gatherings and start to think of ways they can communicate effectively and partner with their Government instead of just sitting around and waiting for the Government to bring services to them. The long term impact of this is a community that will receive the services that are relevant and are a priority to them and addresses the root cause of the challenge. We are sure that this community will be able to advocate for their needs from the proper people when needs arise and ensure their children are taken care of properly.
