As part of Nyaka's 25th anniversary celebrations, 25 young women who grew up through Nyaka's schools and programs gathered in Kampala for The Bridge Dialogue, a conversation designed to connect our newest graduates with accomplished Ugandan women leaders. The panel featured Joan Kirunga, a data scientist at Stanbic Bank Uganda who also leads a community training young women in data science and AI, and Esther, Manager for International Relations at the Uganda Revenue Authority. Moderated by Nyaka's own Amanda Kawaisolya, the dialogue took its name seriously: youth unemployment is high in Uganda, and there are too few bridges carrying talented young women from the classroom into the workforce. This event was built to be one.
The conversation was honest, practical, and deeply personal. The panelists shared their own career journeys and named the barriers young women so often face, including the quiet ones we build ourselves. They urged our alumni to stop disqualifying themselves from opportunities, to treat failure as a fast teacher rather than a verdict, to set clear boundaries in the workplace, and to build reputations so strong that their names are spoken in rooms they have not yet entered. Then the microphones turned around, and our alumni asked questions of women who once stood exactly where they stand now. Your support made these young women's education possible. Events like this one help make sure that education becomes a career, a livelihood, and a life of leadership. Thank you for walking this bridge with them.
