A Nyaka Student Filled with HOPE
Thank you for your recent donation to The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project. With your help we are now in 8th place for the Nike Girl Effect Challenge. We need to advance to 6th place or better in order to win and be one of 12 organizations that share the funding and partnership with Nike Girl Effect in 2012.

At Nyaka and Kutamba Primary Schools, our girls are receiving an education, but even more importantly, they are experiencing the joy of hope. Think about a time when you worked through a difficult situation and came to a place of hope, joy, and knowing “it was all going to be okay.” Your investment in our girls is helping them move from loneliness, grief, and hopelessness. As orphans who have lost their mom and dad at such a young and tender age, it is because of their experience at school that they now feel hope, joy, and love. Their schools aren’t just an educational institution – it is their family.
This isn’t to say that the road is easy for our girls. A few months ago, our secondary school students who attend boarding school were released for holiday a week early due to lack of food at their schools. This scenario has happened in schools all over the country because commodity prices have gone up and funds were not enough to run the schools for the whole term. Our students came back to their homes near Nyaka. Instead of losing that time, they were able to eat and study at the Blue Lupin Library at Nyaka. Their studies weren’t interrupted thanks to Nyaka and our donors who have ensured we give our students medical attention, nutritious meals, access to clean water, love and HOPE!
Over their holiday, secondary school students were also engaged in organized activities under the supervision of our Nyaka staff. They came and worked at Desire Farm 3 days a week. In the afternoons, the students engaged in computer training and revision of their papers in the library. We want our students to enter university at the same level as their peers who grow up with electricity and the benefits of living near a city.
Reproductive health is always a concern for these teenaged girls, and therefore a counseling and guidance session was carried out by female teachers for our secondary school girls. Nyaka Primary Seven students attended holiday classes for 2 full weeks during the holidays to prepare them for their final exam that determines their eligibility to enter secondary school.
Our students walk over a ½ marathon every day to attend school. They study during their holiday break. They work on the Farm and contribute to their grandmothers’ well-being. These girls are between the age of 10 – 14. Try to imagine a young girl who is special to you having to do the same just so they can become educated and hope for a better future.
