A Book Club Inspires Young Readers in Kenya

By Leslie Alvarez | Donor Relations & Events Manager

This year, WGEP’s longtime partner in Kenya, Tharaka Women’s Welfare Programme (TWWP), launched its first Book Club Program at the community library. The program gave young people an opportunity to discover the joy of reading while building confidence, forming connections, and developing practical skills beyond the classroom.

Interest in the program grew quickly. Over seven weeks, participation increased from 10 young people at the first session to an average of 26 participants per session. In total, 32 members registered, 30 attended at least one session, and 14 completed four or more sessions, qualifying for certification.

The Book Club became much more than a place to read. Through interactive discussions, small-group activities, and peer-to-peer learning, participants practiced expressing their ideas, listening to different perspectives, and thinking critically about issues affecting their lives.

Sessions also explored important topics such as health, financial literacy, and relationships. These conversations helped participants gain practical knowledge to support their personal growth, well-being, and future decision-making.

The program concluded with a joyful celebration recognizing participants’ commitment, creativity, and accomplishments. It also demonstrated the community library’s expanding role. More than a place to access books, the library is becoming a vibrant hub where young people can learn, express themselves, build relationships, and feel confident sharing their ideas.

One participant reflected:

“I am truly humbled and honored to be part of this amazing book group. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our youth bubbling with ideas and boldly expressing their creativity. Your impact is powerful and inspiring.”

Thanks to your support, WGEP and TWWP can continue creating welcoming spaces where young people develop a love of learning and gain the confidence and skills they need to shape their futures.
