While most of us have had the opportunity to attend preschool, it's not as common in other parts of the world. We view this as a huge problem that hinders develpment because those who attend preschool often do better in their schooling than those who do not attend preschool. In South Africa, analysis of the 2007 SACMEQ survey of a large sample of Grade 6 school children across all nine provinces found significantly higher literacy and numeracy scores among those who had attended preschool compared to those who had not (Moloi & Chetty 2011).
About and Impact of ECD programs.
Children from Afrika Tikkun's Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers have been empowered because of their exposure to appropriate educational interventions that has led to most of them attaining and most often exceeding their developmental milestones. We have graduated hundreds of children into primary schools. Feedback received from feeder schools are that the children’s performances at school are in all cases above average. Thus, those children who do not have the opportunity to attend our ECD programs most often perform below average.
Our ECD programs provide children with six programs to empower them:
Testimony.
Aphiwe was born and raised in rural KwaZulu Natal Province. When Aphiwe started attending the ECD programs she was unable to communicate in English. This was a challenge for Aphiwe. Through the special attention given to Aphiwe by her ECD teacher, Aphiwe proved to be a remarkable fast learner. It has been impressive to see her bringing order in the classroom when the ECD Practitioner is away and she can read all her classmates names. Aphiwe has also been leading the class in doing alphabets, counting and has also impressed her ECD teacher with the kinds of questions she asks in class regarding their daily activities.
