Dear Afrika Tikkun Friends and Family,
Thank you for your continued support as we continue to change the lives of over 17,000 beneficiaries living in disadvantaged positions. It is through your support and generosity that Afrika Tikkun is able to continue its mission to invest in education, health and social services for children, youth and their families through Afrika Tikkun’s community Centers of Excellence and strategic partnerships.
Equal Start at Life
The harsh reality is that not all children have an equal start at life. Due to circumstances beyond their control, many families are living in poverty and do not have equal access to resources that will help break the vicious poverty cycle. Through Afrika Tikkun’s development programs, children are able to realize and reach their full potential as they grow and develop into adulthood.
Early Childhood Development Centers
Afrika Tikkun is devoted to investing in early childhood development because it improves the lives of the children and it makes the future of South Africa more sustainable. The objectives of our Early Childhood Development Centers are to:
Success Story of Mandala
11 year old Mandla voluntarily joined our after school Child and Youth Development Programme. Our life skills facilitator noticed that Mandla was not happy, came to the programme looking dishevelled and disrupted the programme. Our life skills facilitator discussed the situation with our social worker, prompting a home visit. When visiting Mandla’s house the social worker discovered that Mandla was living with his mother and step father who were both drug addicts. Their situation was horrendous and it became clear that every cent of the household’s money was spent on supporting their drug habit. Mandla witnessed his mother and step father do things an 11-year-old boy should never ever have to witness.
With the help of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of, an Afrika Tikkun social worker, Mandla’s teacher and the life skills facilitator, Mandla was temporarily moved to Mfuleni’s ‘Place of Safety’ for children where he received the care and attention he needed. Afrika Tikkun then found a foster family for Mandla to move in with. Although this was extremely tough for Mandla and he still faces hardships, his life has changed for the better and this is evident in his current behaviour and response to developmental investment. Afrika Tikkun’s support has provided Mandla with the potential to thrive.
