Xch’ool Ixim (Heart of Corn) is excited to share that our Q’eqchi’ Maya Bilingual and Cultural Primary and Secondary Education team have completed the first
Maya Local Curriculum for Primary Education
We are honored to present this new Maya curriculum with the Guatemala Ministry of Education at a ceremony that will take place on July 17, 2026 in Cobán, Alta Verapaz.
Over the past two years, we have worked closely with the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) to strengthen culturally relevant and bilingual education in seven rural Q’eqchi’ schools and develop a Maya Local Curriculum for Primary Education for 44 primary schools located in some of the most underserved communities of Alta Verapaz.
We are pleased to share three important milestones that have been achieved:
1) MINEDUC has completed the production and printing of the Maya Local Curriculum for distribution to 90 teachers in the 44 participating schools.
2) MINEDUC has printed 2,000 copies of Baile de Venado(The Dance of the Deer), a bilingual reading text with three narratives in Q’eqchi’ and Spanish rooted in local culture, authored by Ava Berinstein, for student’s use in all 44 schools.
3) MINEDUC has printed Aritmética Maya, a culturally relevant mathematics resource, created by Xch’ool Ixim in 2011 to assist teachers in the 44 schools.
For us, this gathering is an opportunity to celebrate what has been accomplished through our partnerships with the Ministry, our donors, and our supporters, and to demonstrate tangible results, building momentum for the next phase of educational transformation in Q’eqchi’ communities.
Thank you once again for your trust, partnership, and commitment to Maya cultural education!
