Educate and Empower Girls in Mexico

Barriers to Opportunity
Rural girls face different barriers as lack of schools in locations, cultural expectations that prioritize caregiving over education, and families struggling with poverty. Without access to quality education or skills beyond academic learning, girls lack the agency to challenge these realities. According to UNICEF, 1 in 5 girls in Mexico marries before 18, with higher rates in rural and indigenous communities. Rural communities often lack infrastructure and resources, but they also harbor rich cultural traditions. Life skills programs must collaborate with local leaders to blend modern tools with cultural relevance.

Life Skills: Bridging Education and Empowerment
Life skills—critical thinking, financial literacy, communication, decision-making, and emotional resilience, support girls to thrive in complex environments. Life skills program “ Yo quiero, Yo puedo” (I want to, I can) facilitate practical knowledge and skills, reducing barriers tailored to local contexts. Girls with life skills are more likely to stay in school. Examples of contents in the program are:

  • Financial literacy helps girls manage resources, start small businesses, or advocate for economic independence.
  • Negotiation and communication skills enable girls to challenge harmful norms, delay marriage, and participate in community decisions.
  • Health education empowers them to seek reproductive care.

We can make the change
Life skills complement formal education, keeping girls in school longer and preparing them for roles beyond the home. We must invest in education for life as a transformative strategy that enhance girls with practical tools to deal with challenges, defend their rights, and build self-efficacy.

We can empower girls to become agents of change in their communities.  Support initiatives that train teachers, engage families, and provide seed funding for girls’ projects are needed to equipping rural girls for life. We can  dismantle the roots of inequality in girls and unlock Mexico’s full potential.
