Inclusion in Action: Our Students Shine in Karate

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

At EEESMA School for the Deaf, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to participate fully in the world around them. Our students recently experienced the power of inclusion firsthand when they proudly participated in the commemorative tournament celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Shotokan Karate School.

This special event was about much more than karate. By welcoming our Deaf students into their dojo, the Rivera family created an environment where children and young people could develop confidence, demonstrate their abilities, build friendships, and experience the pride of belonging. Participating alongside others in the hearing community helps our students challenge barriers, discover their potential, and recognize that being Deaf does not limit what they can accomplish.

Experiences like this are essential to our mission. While EEESMA provides a supportive environment where students develop language, literacy, and life skills, opportunities beyond the classroom allow them to apply those skills, form meaningful connections, and become more active, independent members of their community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Rivera family for their continued support and for opening their dojo to our Deaf community. We also thank our generous GlobalGiving donors, whose contributions help our students access educational opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

Together, we are building a more inclusive world where every child has the opportunity to participate, thrive, and belong. Thank you for making this possible!
