Strengthening Families Through Sign Language

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

At EEESMA School for the Deaf, family partnership is essential to student success. Many parents arrive with little knowledge of Deaf culture or Mexican Sign Language (LSM), making communication with their children a significant challenge. Through daily interactions with teachers, regular updates, and a dedicated WhatsApp group, families become active participants in their children's education and development.

Families are also an important part of school life, joining celebrations such as Christmas, National Day of the Deaf, graduations, and other community events. These shared experiences foster trust, belonging, and a strong sense of connection within the EEESMA community.

One of the most impactful initiatives has been the Padres LSM program. During 2024–2025, twenty-five parents committed to learning Mexican Sign Language. The program concluded with a moving ceremony in which mothers signed presentations to their children, many for the first time. For students, seeing their parents communicate with them in their first language was a powerful and emotional experience.

Because of its success, a new Padres LSM program is planned for late 2026. Led by EEESMA's experienced teachers, these classes will continue to strengthen family relationships and help Deaf children experience the invaluable gift of communication, understanding, and belonging.

Your support makes these life-changing opportunities possible. Thank you from all of us at EEESMA School for the Deaf.
