2014 Fellow Yusra teaches English to Grade 7 and 8 at a secondary school in Karachi. She is working tirelessly to develop these key attitudes and skills in her students:
“I want my students to internalize the ‘I Can’ and ‘I Want’ mindset. This forms the basis of any long term successful trait, I believe. Moreover, I want them to always visualize and plan. Setting goals and planning is something that will motivate and direct them. I want them to realize the importance of hard work. As cliched as it is, the key to success is hard work, and they have to learn to revel in them rather than dread it. My students will inevitably face lots of problems, crossroads at times when they would have to make decisions. Critical thinking, and problem solving are some mindsets that are crucial for them to develop. Moreover, they have to learn to take help from others and to work and respect others, and that is something that comes with knowing how to be a good team player.”
We can already see the results of Yusra's dedication and her students hard work. Yusra’s student, Mehwish, came third in an essay writing competition, which included multiple essay entries from over 200 schools in Karachi. She wrote an essay about ‘My Idea of a Peaceful Karachi’. Her essay beat all other entries including many high performing private schools to secure the third position!
