Educate 100 Under Privileged Children for One Year

Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) is a 16 year old registered NGO, based in Bangalore, India, with a mission of educating and empowering underprivileged children and supporting them until they are gainfully employed. Summer vacations are over and the children are back to school .Now they can reconnect with old friends and they get new books, pencils, bags, uniforms,sweaters.shoes and bags A  new  school year means one step closer in reaching their goal of a basic education.

This is a story of one of the ACT children

Sandhya has been with ACT for eight years now. After her family moved to Bangalore from rural Tamil Nadu in 2005, her mother found work as a housemaid, while her father was employed as a construction labourer. She began as a student in 2009, when her parents found it difficult to pay  her school fees. Despite having to deal with her father’s alcoholism, and the physical abuse directed towards her mother, Sandhya successfully graduated secondary school. She credits ACT as being a part of this achievement, as the organization supported her throughout her education, providing her with food, resources and tuition. Though, as she says, she was always studious by her own accord.Now studying Commerce, she currently volunteers at the Trust herself, teaching English and Math to the children. She says it’s a hobby more than anything, as she’d rather teach than sit at home. When asked of the future, she said she’s prioritized focusing on her studies.
