Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) alumnus, Sunil Kumar (name changed), all of twenty two years young, began his journey with ACT in 2011, when he was in class seven. His teacher from school (AGCC) spoke to his parents about the Trust, and as he was a good student, he was enrolled with ACT. Sunil Kumar’s story takes us through the full circle of how the Trust impacts the lives of children from the disadvantaged communities in Bangalore.
He is a first generation learner from his family of two parents and a younger brother and sister. Sunil Kumar is now working with Northern Trust, one of the top 5 banks in the United States. He works in a reconciliation team, matching clients and bank books. He always wanted to work in a bank, and his dream is realised.
Until now, only his father was earning, but since his appointment he lends a hand of support so that his dad can relax a little, if not completely. Every moment in ACT is a happy memory for him. He highlights the annual day, field trips, his black belt, and receiving awards as most memorable.
At the Trust, he learned things like computers and became a Black-belt Karate student. More importantly, he tells us that he learned how to prioritise and manage work and deadlines.
He emphasises that “Education is the main pillar for your support and career growth. I have been ranked as 1,2,3, topper in my class. Quiz, exhibitions, experiments in schools (extracurriculars) have exposed me to knowledge and helps me to understand how that works, helped me enter St. Josephs, where I was selected as the placement representative for my college. I managed 400 placements with my team."
“It was a great journey to be in ACT for 9 whole years. One of the main reasons I am here is because of ACT. I was only good at studies but learned that there is more to life. Now there is a lot on my plate. ACT has been my main support for me being like this. I learned a lot from ACT”.
When asked what inspired him, Sunil Kumar says, “My seniors at ACT. Until 10th grade, I was only attending school and going home. After entering PUC, I was assigned small work like data entry. I was open minded to learning. In degree, I learned from my seniors how ACT works, and divides work assigned to those who can excel in that particular path.”
His advice to the present ACT children is, “Whatever hurdles you face, or come through, go for it and move on, don’t stop or don’t pause.” This is just the beginning for Sunil Kumar and all of us at ACT wish him all the best on his journey of life.
