Since the 3rd of August, Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) has begun pairing our Teachers with the children of the Trust on Whatsapp for online classes. One teacher to two students. So far, it has been an enriching experience but it posed some challenges to get it off the ground. We are constantly learning, alongside the children.
One of our main challenges is access to technology and the internet. Most children don’t have even a phone of their own, which means that the path to reach them is through a parent’s phone. Usually, only one parent has a smartphone. This poses impracticality when the parent requires the phone for work and simply isn’t at home. These challenges still persist.
We have over 20 volunteers who are currently teaching 75 of our children. So there are 120 hours of teaching going on per week. As and when we get volunteers, we are trying to reach as many children as we can. We are also trying to reach out to organizations/ people who can help us in getting/ donating smartphones with data, to help in our online teaching program.
