Save a School with Ashwini Charitable Trust

When Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) adopted the Government Tamil Primary School in Murphy Town, Bangalore the school surroundings  was in a bad shape. ACT worked hard to mobilise funds for repairing  and rebuilding the infrastructure of the school. As a result, now  80+ children studying there are in a safe, secure, clean and attractive environment.

Recently, ACT set up a science lab in the Govt. School, which was inaugurated by Ms. Nadia Haton, well-wisher and friend of the Trust Now, apart from providing/rebuilding the basic facilities like a Kitchen, Toilets, Drinking water and Watchman’s room, ACT has also facilitated additional educational aids such as the Computer Lab, Library and Science Lab. All the rooms are well ventilated and have electricity. ACT has handed over the watchman’s room to a family which now provides the security for the school and the children. ACT prepares a special porridge mix keeping in mind the nutritional needs of growing children, and this with jaggery to sweeten the porridge is supplied to the school children every week. The porridge and milk for the children are now prepared in the new clean, and well lit kitchen

The garden is maintained by a gardener employed by the Trust. It was de-weeded regularly and stone benches and walls of the park were painted recently. The fence was redone and bricks were arranged around the plants and saplings.

ACT facilitates the CSR activities. Volunteers from Thomson Reuters had come to the Govt. School and they taught the students how to make paper bags and charts and also conducted some quizzes and other activities which the children enjoyed immensely.  April and May are months when the school is closed for summer vacations, hence there was no volunteering activity during these months. The school reopened on 1st June, and ACT volunteers are back to assist the teachers and students with their academic work, especially in English and Maths.

ACT’s work in the school is ongoing and a lot more has to be done. The school has a huge ground behind it, which can be utilized very effectively for the benefit of the children.  Since the school is an almost hundred year old heritage building, there are many infrastructure issues such as leaking roofs, damp walls and broken floor tiles.

Currently ACT is in the process of consulting experts as to whether the roof tiles have to be replaced or whether putting a tarpaulin sheet above the tiles would be sufficient to see us through this year’s monsoon rains.

ACT is keen to get internet wifi connectivity to the school so that the children are exposed to computers and the e - world at the earliest. Authorities from BSNL have been consulted and we are hopeful that the Govt. School children will soon be digitally connected.

Lack of funds is constraining us from doing more.  We appeal for more funds through global giving, so that the poverty stricken parents and their underprivileged children are attracted by the facilities and amenities and come back to school.
