This project will provide sponsorship for school fees and learning materials to 50 children with developmental disabilities in Nairobi slums and rural areas of Kenya. LBF will work with schools to build capacity to offer education for special needs children and sponsor children to access the education taking care of their needs like learning support unit, shadow teachers, learning materials and meals.
There are currently more than 2 million children living with disabilities in Kenya.3.7% of these are developmental disabilities like autism and down syndrome. For many years the school system has not catered for these children leading to a disadvantage for them accessing education which is their fundamental right. Although recently the government has recognized autism as a disability, a lot needs to be done to enable children access education. This project will promote inclusivity in schools.
LBF provides capacity building for teachers, set up of learning support units, offering learning materials to children, connecting parents of children with special needs to schools. Parents from poor households who are unable to afford schools fees are supported by paying of school fees.
The project will help educate 50 children with developmental disabilities from the slums and rural areas, helping them access their fundamental right to basic education. Through access to education children have an opportunity to learn and achieve their God given potential. Parents will find hope as their children can now go to school as others and parents can be free to go out and fend for their families.
