EduVision Program
The Project Vision, an initiative of the Hope Society, has several programs to reach out to the visually challenged people – promotion of eye donation, treatment and various programs of rehabilitation to enable them to live a meaningful life.
EduVision is our program of education for the visually challenged. With a focus on higher education, we support the college going students. They are have struggle to fight all odds of life to complete their schooling to reach college level. We aid them at this stage with materials, study aids, college fees and help in studying and writing exams, and so on.
With the amount raised through the Global giving, we have already started our work. We have identified students who need help both in Bangalore and Chennai. A strategy has been worked out. Formats have been developed. Assistance in term so financial support has been extended to some students already. Some of the special programs are given below.
SMILING FACES – LOUIS BRAILLE DAY
Commemorating the birth of Louis Braille, our celebration on January 4th, reached out to help 25 visually challenged students by distributing Louis Braille equipments. The Braille writing pad would be of great help for the students in their regular work. The program was conducted at the Project Vision office. Many of the students narrated their challenges of studying and requested for further help in their pursuit of study. Fr James, Claretian Provincial was the Chief Guest. Dr Jayanth Kumar, who is visually challenged encouraged the students to perform well despite their blindness, as he shared his life story with them.
IDENTIFYING THE STUDENTS
We have set an Action Plan to fulfill the dream of 50 visually challenged students to continue their higher education. The first stage was to identify to students who need and deserve our support. We sent out the information through our contacts and several students have approached us with the required information. Mr Siby George is seen with the students whose information has been collected.
We have successfully aided in funding 32 students from Bangalore, and we are in the process of finalizing applications received from Chennai.
EYE SCREENING CAMP
An eye screening camp was conducted on 20th of February at Akshara Public School on Magadi. Most of the students there are from economically weaker sections. The purpose was to identify students who might have a visual defect and correct them at a very early age. Their parents were also provided the facility of eye screening. Team from Modi hospital were the technical support team for this process. A total of 470 people underwent the camp. Twelve persons were identified as needing cataract operations. They were provided free operations at Modi hospital on the 24th. 80 people, most of them students require spectacles and they will be provided with free spectacles on the 10th of March.
Apart from this, we made them aware about eye donation and being socially conscious young citizens .
