The family and social environment in early childhood is fundamental to reduce inequality gaps. That is why our work now has a new and clearer perspective: to promote upward social mobility from the first years of life, so that our children, when they grow up, are young people capable of achieving better living conditions than their parents. After a year, the situation in Ecuador continues to be very complex and in our communities there has been an increase in violent deaths due to confrontations between criminal gangs. However, we are committed to offering safe and welcoming places where parents can learn to stimulate their children and create healthy bonds.
For this new school year, 51 children moved on to 1st grade and we started with more than 200 participating children and their families. Our proposal will continue with an educational component for parents and children (weekly meetings with the educators and learning corners) that will incorporate workshops with experts, and another component of integration and culture, with regular activities and outings. This year, in addition to topics on responsible parenting, child development and affectivity, other topics such as financial education and prevention of migration will also be addressed, and the development of life skills, “culture of peace” and care for the environment will be cross-cutting themes, in order to provide families with tools to face any circumstance.
The welcome and gratitude of the families towards their educators during the first home visits of the year have been significant, even with fear of insecurity or lack of services (power and water cuts), because they feel that there is someone who cares about them; the solidarity shown among mothers to supply water; and the participation in the cultural event “Encuentro Quito” (entitled “You are an asset for me: the wealth of the self builds a we” with panels on Politics, Education and Culture) overcoming the distance and power cuts in the city.
Now more than ever, our communities are also thankful. We count on your support for this Giving Tuesday, which will be next December 3rd!
