The second term of 2026 was a period of meaningful progress for the Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Eco-Tourism Scheme (ASSETS), marked by significant achievements in both education and community conservation. Through continued investment in scholarships, mentorship, environmental education, and ecosystem restoration, the programme empowered vulnerable students while strengthening the capacity of local communities to safeguard the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek.

This report highlights the key activities and achievements undertaken during the reporting period, demonstrating how ASSETS continues to create lasting impact by linking educational opportunities with community-led conservation. Together with students, parents, schools, and local partners, the programme is building a future where improved livelihoods and healthy ecosystems go hand in hand.

Scholarship Programme Overview – Term Two, 2026

The second term of 2026 marked another significant milestone for the scholarship programme, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that vulnerable students remain in school. During the term, USD 7,353 was disbursed to 55 schools across Kenya, supporting the education of 94 students in Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4.

A particularly inspiring achievement during the reporting period was the successful enrolment of two female students who had been unable to join Grade 10 in the first term due to school fee challenges. Through the programme's intervention, both students were able to begin their secondary education in the second term. They expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, sharing their determination to work hard, excel academically, and pursue their dreams.

This milestone highlights the programme's continued role in removing financial barriers to education and creating life-changing opportunities for deserving students.

Community Conservation Programme

The year began on a positive note with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Muvera wa ASSETS, an association of parents whose children are current or former beneficiaries of the Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Eco-Tourism Scheme (ASSETS). The meeting provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the association's progress and reaffirm their commitment to conserving the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek.

Representatives from all Muvera clusters presented reports highlighting a wide range of community-led conservation activities undertaken during the year. These included tree planting, environmental restoration, and community awareness campaigns, demonstrating the growing ownership of conservation initiatives among local communities.

A key outcome of the AGM was the election of a new leadership team to guide the association over the coming term. The newly elected officials bring fresh energy and renewed commitment, and there is strong optimism that their leadership will strengthen community participation and advance the conservation goals of Muvera wa ASSETS.

April Holiday Programme

The April Holiday Programme brought together 179 students and 181 parents, providing an opportunity to welcome new beneficiaries and strengthen engagement across the ASSETS community. For students joining the programme for the first time, the event introduced the objectives of ASSETS, programme expectations, and their role in promoting environmental stewardship.

The programme featured team-building activities, interactive games, and mentorship sessions led by experienced mentors and educators, equipping students with the motivation and guidance needed to thrive both academically and personally. Parents and students also participated in an environmental education session that highlighted the importance of conserving the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek, while reinforcing their shared responsibility to protect these vital ecosystems for future generations.

The holiday programme strengthened the bond between beneficiaries, their families, and the ASSETS programme, while reaffirming the strong connection between education and conservation.

Tree Planting and Ecosystem Restoration

Term Two of 2026 coincided with the long rainy season, providing ideal conditions for ecosystem restoration. During this period, the ASSETS conservation team mobilised local communities and partner schools around the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek to participate in tree-planting activities.

A total of 8,404 trees were planted, with three partner schools actively participating in the restoration efforts. Members of the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK) also played a key role, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship by taking an active part in restoring degraded habitats.

These tree-planting initiatives continue to strengthen community ownership of conservation while nurturing the next generation of environmental champions.
