An Update from the Field!!

Mercy introducing her Invention to the Crowd!
Mercy introducing her Invention to the Crowd!

Thanks again for supporting our Project! Here is a real-time update from the field:

Last month, Mercy Sigey, a student finalist from 2013, was invited to the 5th Annual Social Good Summit hosted by the 92Y, Mashable and the United Nations Foundation. She demonstrated her invention to an audience of 1,000 people, while also experiencing the dynamic life of New York City for the very first time!

Mercy and her two teammates from Precious Blood High School, Tracy and Joyce, invented a motion sensor because they saw the need to fight against elephant poaching in Kenya. Around 20,000 elephants are killed in Africa each year by poachers to support the thriving ivory trade. Currently, the level of elephant poaching is beyond sustainability.

The girls combined technology with their love for animals by making a motion sensor that detects poachers. They used a passive infrared to monitor movement of human and animal life in the park. This passive infrared device is incorporated with infrared insulator badges that enable rangers to catch poachers. Their current prototype consists of a PIR module and an Arduino microcontroller which senses movement within a range of nine meters and sends the information to a computer through a cable.

Mercy and her teammates are now inspiring and equipping other young girls in Kenya to use technology as a way to overcome environmental challenges in their country. Way to go Mercy, keep up the amazing work!
