To protect frontline healthcare staff and the public, To prevent healthcare staff from becoming close contacts and being taken off duty To instil confidence in the public so that they continue to attend healthcare centres, To detect potential cases at an early stage
In light of the emergence of new cases of Ebola, Medicos del Mundo - which is already operating in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Tanganyika - is adapting its programmes to ensure access to healthcare (which remain essential) by integrating them into the response plans coordinated by the Provincial Health Divisions
In coordination with local health authorities, Medicos del Mundo is implementing a community-based response to contain the virus through awareness campaigns, home visits, community dialogues, misinformation prevention, case detection and referral, reaching over 120,000 people. The organisation has also trained 90 healthcare professionals and strengthened priority health centres through infection prevention measures, safe patient pathways and dedicated transport for suspected cases.
Beyond the immediate response, this approach leaves a lasting legacy by strengthening local capacities, improving preparedness and reinforcing health systems, enabling communities and health services to respond more effectively to future outbreaks.
