Eat Better South Africa (SA) is the community initiative of The Noakes Foundation, aimed at addressing chronic disease and obesity in under served communities in South Africa, through nutrition education programs.

After piloting 10 successful community interventions across SA, the focus for 2018 was to pilot a sustainability model to maintain the effectiveness and success of our programs. This was implemented in the community of Atlantis and included the appointment of a communtiy coach, Slyvia Scholtz, who runs biweekly group session that involves tracking of health markers as well as providing the relevant nutrition education, support and resources.

Some of these resources include a local budget shopping list  and a 7 day meal plans that we have made freely available for download and distribution.

This November, the Eat Better team was back in Atlantis to show how following a whole foods diet, low in refined carbohydrates and sugars, can be cost effective, delicious and nutritious. We shopped at the local fresh produce market, documenting through our Facebook Live Feature, how, by supporting local businesses, one is able to purchase wholefoods at a fraction of the retail price. We then used these foods to prepare delicious and easy lunch options.

With 2018 coming to a close, we are buckling down for another amazing year of transforming lives, one community at a time. Our 2019 intervention programs which will be evaluated as part of a PhD study focusing on women in under resourced communities, is set to start early next year.

With our projects being funding dependant, we would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported our campaign thus far. With your continued support and generosity, we are able to change the lives of the many South Africans in need of a better and healthier life. We encourage you to please continue to support our programs through our Global Giving Campaign and help be part of this answer.

We take this opportunity to wish you a safe and blessed holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
