Building Hope from Pain - Easter Island Memorial

By Ikechukwu Kelechukwu | Project Lead

Four years of violent insecurity in Aku Community, Okigwe LGA, Imo State, left deep scars, lives lost, families shattered, and a community struggling with unresolved trauma. Today, we are taking the first bold step toward healing, remembrance, and peacebuilding.

Through your support, we are advancing plans to establish the Easter Island Memorial Park, a transformative community memorial project designed to honor victims, support trauma healing, and foster community resilience in a post-conflict environment.

This memorial park will serve as the following:

  • A safe healing space for grieving families
  • A remembrance site preserving the stories of those lost
  • A hub for peace education, youth engagement, and reconciliation
  • A platform for art, music therapy, and cultural expression

Progress So Far

We have begun:

  • Community consultations with local leaders, youth groups, and affected families
  • Initial concept design for the memorial monument and remembrance wall
  • Engagement planning for peace dialogues and psychosocial support activities

The response from the community has been deeply emotional and hopeful. For many families, this will be the first dignified space to mourn, reflect, and begin healing.

Why This Matters

In post-conflict communities like Aku, unaddressed trauma can fuel cycles of violence. By investing in memorialization, mental health support, and peacebuilding initiatives, we are not just remembering the past; we are actively shaping a more peaceful future.

This project aligns with global priorities in:

  • Post-conflict recovery and reconciliation
  • Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS)
  • Violence prevention and peacebuilding
  • Community-led development and resilience building

How You Can Help

We cannot do this alone. With 0 donors so far, your support is urgently needed to turn this vision into reality.

Your donation will help us

  • Construct the memorial park and monument
  • Launch trauma healing and psychosocial support programs
  • Organize peacebuilding workshops and youth engagement activities
  • Host annual Easter remembrance events promoting unity and non-violence

Donate today and be part of restoring hope, dignity, and peace in Aku Community.

Every contribution—big or small—brings us closer to creating a lasting symbol of healing, unity, and resilience.

Together, we can transform grief into hope and ensure that those we lost are never forgotten.
