This project will help adolescent girls from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society to use technology both as a tool and as a medium in helping them raise their voices and generate awareness on the issue of early and forced marriage (EFM). Girls associated with the Technical Center at Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT), a not-for-profit organization, would shoot and produce a film on EFM that would highlight their daily struggles in countering this social menace.
The problem of early marriage is a menace that unites all girls associated with the Technical Center at FAT and this project. While their age varies between 14 and 25, the one experience that binds them all is the constant pressure to get married. It continues to be the biggest challenge and affects them greatly as entering marriage-hood not only affects them physically and mentally but negates women's agency and individual self. They are made to follow diktats of husband and his family
30 girls from Tech Center would be associated with the early marriage project, who would undergo training and attend workshops on film-making to facilitate the process of producing a film. The project aims to provide a platform for young girls to voice their concerns through powerful storytelling. Not only will the film be produced and directed by the girls independently but will help them with community activism and fight against early marriages in their community.
The project aims to directly help 30 girls in 5 communities, who will also be involved in film making on the issue of early marriages. This film making process will provide them with gender training, through workshops, and further the community activism they are already involved in. This, in turn, will help them articulate their issues in front of the community which will impact (minimum of) 500 more girls of the communities stated above.
