Progress report for Malungeni project

By James Harrison | Fundraiser for Africa A+ Schools

REPORT ON MALUNGENI PROJECT – December 2024

1) This project had one contact session in the first quarter of 2024 which went extremely well, but owing to a lack of additional funds we were unable to follow up with the other three sessions that were planned for the year.

2) Africa A+ Schools (A+) has secured funding from Arm in Arm in Africa, an organization in the USA, to carry out contact sessions in February and March of 2025.

3) The project will receive a site visit from a another potential funder in February 2025. This funder may fund the balance of the project.

4) The money raised for the Malungeni project on GlobalGiving is assisting us to build up funds for a third contact session in 2025.

5) The community of Malungeni greatly appreciates the work that A+ does and is hungry for more opportunities to see practical implementation of the curriculum. Parents are also eager to engage with A+ and learn more about how to stimulate learning with their children.

6) Our challenges in carrying out the project include:

  • The rural roads infrastructure is problematic, making it difficult to reach schools, especially after rain.
  • There is limited access to data and the internet so our usual approach of using WhatsApp between contact sessions, is severely limited.
  • Teachers are presently on leave and resume their work in mid-January, so no contact session can take place before February 2025.
  • Preschool teachers are not paid regularly by the Department of Basic Education, therefore it is difficult for them to stay motivated.
