By Johana Sojuel | Early Intervention Teacher
At the end of 2018, 65 children in Santiago Atitlán and its surrounding communities were enrolled in Adisa’s Early Intervention program. Within this program, therapies are offered regularly both within the installations of Adisa as well as in the homes of many children that live in communities far from our offices. Every child enrolled in the program has an individualized plan that guides therapy sessions.
In this last quarter, during the months of October and November, 168 visits were made. In December, during the month of school vacation, children in the Early Intervention program and their families attended Adisa’s Christmas gathering. Food, games, and fun were had by all.
In this report, we would like to share the story of three-year-old Diego. His mother explains that she had a normal birth but Diego was born slightly premature, at eight months and 10 days. Upon birth, he was hospitalized because his heartbeat was irregular and, once his heartbeat had normalized, his parents were informed that Diego had Down Syndrome.
Diego quickly began receiving services at Adisa. Currently, he participates in the Early Intervention program and language therapy. His parents are very grateful for the support that Adisa is providing. Diego, a very hyperactive child that loves to play ball and hide-and-seek, has advanced a lot and has learned to play well during his time at Adisa.
