New partnerships and extension of the multidisciplinary team.

In December, the Children´s Cancer Institute became 24 years old, but the celebrations are not restricted  to the anniversary of the institution. In recent years it has built new partnerships  and has also amplified the support services for the children, adolescents and their families who go through a long period of struggle against infant-juvenile cancer.

Over the years, the ICI has become a reference within call centers which are focused exclusively on the treatment of children with cancer. Contracts have been signed with major Hospitals in our town such as Hospital de Clinicas of Porto Alegre, Conceição Hospital Group and Hospital São Lucas of Pucrs. The inclusion of Santa Casa de Misericórdia is within our main projects for 2016.

The construction of the new Integrated Support Center was designed to meet a greater number of demands, it will also extend to clinical research, epidemiological, molecular and cellular research plus multidisciplinary services( pedagogical support, nutrition, dentistry aid, psychology, social service and recreation).

Throughout 24 years of existence, the Children´s Cancer Institute has increased the chances of cure from a low  40%  to new  positive position of 75% of cure.

Cilene Silva is now 24 years old, she was a former patient of the Children´s Cancer Institute a true example of overcoming cancer, she fought for 6 years against a Leukemia and she is now cured. In January she celebrated her graduation degree in pedagogy.

The ICI staff was touched by Celine´s words in inviting them for the graduation celebration:  “ I am graduating in Pedagogy in the Feevale University, being that I am an ex ICIRS patient, I would love to have your presence at this important moment given that you were supporters and the pillars during the essential moments of my growing up and of my constitution as a professional and academic one.

Example like Cilene are the driving force for the entire ICI team to continue their work with the help of all the community, partners, volunteers and staff, it has been possible to turn what was just a dream into reality. The institute needs to grow even further so that many more children can continue growing.  This is just a success chapter of our great story.
