Summary

Early College at Franklin Cummings Tech helps Boston high school juniors and seniors explore STEM majors, build confidence, and foster belonging. Students receive free tuition, college credit, learning materials, advising, coaching, and career exploration in tech and engineering. Students earn a year's worth of college credits before high school graduation and can complete their associate degree one year later - a full year ahead of schedule.

Challenge

We serve 98% economically disadvantaged students, many facing barriers like food insecurity, housing instability, and unreliable transportation. Nearly 50% are first-generation college students. The program introduces students to careers in tech and trades, offering a low-entry head start to a degree and career. Students gain hard and soft skills, peer connections, and receive mentoring and career counseling to help achieve their goals.

Solution

Our Early College Program offers high school juniors and seniors a tuition-free pathway to a degree, saving time and money. Students, (the majority of whom are from low-income families), earn a year of college credit while completing high school, tuition-free. After graduation, they finish their associate degree in one year, gaining skills for well-paying careers in the trades at a fraction of the cost of traditional colleges.

Long-Term Impact

Statistics from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts show that 76% of high schoolers who participate in Early College Programs enroll in higher education or go into the workforce after graduation (compared to 55% of high schoolers who do not). Contributions to this project also provide critical student services and resources such as peer-mentoring, food vouchers, textbooks and tools/technology to support their path to graduation.
