CDRC hosts an annual ABKD Poster Making Contest as part of their disaster preparedness advocacy. ABKD, which stands for 'Apoy, Bagyo, Kalamidad: Dibuhong Pambata,' has been organized by the Citizens' Disaster Response Center since 1996. The contest aims to recognize children's abilities and raise awareness about disaster preparedness. It provides a platform for children to express their creative thoughts on DRR.
Children in the Philippines often lack awareness and preparedness for disasters like typhoons, earthquakes, and floods. Limited access to information and occasional lack of support from family or community networks exacerbate their vulnerability during emergencies. As the most vulnerable demographic, their insufficient awareness hinders their ability to stay safe and respond effectively.
As children represent the future torchbearers of disaster preparedness in their communities, ABKD will serve as an empowering avenue to share their unique perspectives on disasters, advocate for change, or contribute to disaster resilience efforts. Through this nationwide poster-making contest, children will not only express their creativity but also instill awareness and inspire action towards building more resilient communities.
Through this initiative, children's disaster awareness will increase and will empower future generations with the essential knowledge to mitigate the impacts of disasters and advocate for disaster resilience.
