Dear supporters,
The winds of change have been strong — and Green Phenix is rising with them. In the past few months, we’ve moved, innovated, and grown in ways that strengthen our role as a catalyst for a circular and inclusive economy on Curaçao and across the region.
Our Move: A New Hub for Change
Our move from Polarisweg to Kaya Andira is now largely complete. While we’ve left behind a location filled with memories and milestones, our new base is fully operational — and reflects a leaner, more agile approach. Materials are now sorted and redistributed immediately, turning our site into a dynamic hub for circular flows and collaboration.
Behind the scenes, we’re also continuing to explore long-term site development — one that aligns with our mission of creating systemic change in both environmental and social spheres.
New Products: Launching the I-Care Coin Series
June marked an exciting milestone: we officially began production of the I-Care Coin series — a set of injection-moulded souvenirs made from locally recycled plastic. Each coin celebrates one of Curaçao’s most iconic animals:
Iguana
Goat
Wara Wara
Flamingo
Green Sea Turtle
More than souvenirs, these coins carry a message of pride and purpose. As we prepare to launch them on the local and tourist market, we see them as a symbol of impact made tangible — allowing people to support our mission with every coin they collect or gift.
Expanding Our Product Ecosystem
Beyond the I-Care Coin series, we’ve begun producing a variety of purpose-driven products using recycled plastic, including:
Half-fabricates for Kukudushi, a local souvenir company
Recycled plastic chess pieces for educational and community projects
Beads and buttons, supporting local makers and crafts
These collaborations reflect our role as more than a recycler — we are a platform for island innovation, supporting other entrepreneurs in turning waste into meaningful, high-quality products.
Circular Innovation: Exploring New Uses for PET Flakes
Despite our efforts, reinserting locally collected PET flakes into global recycling value chains has proven nearly impossible. But giving up is not in our DNA. Instead, we’re charting new ground by exploring the integration of PET into asphalt mixes — an innovation supported by scientific studies showing that small amounts of PET can enhance asphalt durability.
This direction could open a new circular pathway for materials currently considered "waste," especially in island contexts that are typically excluded from such solutions.
Transitions: A Grateful Farewell to Tijmen
July also brought a heartfelt goodbye as our operational lead, Tijmen, embarked on a new professional chapter. His dedication, leadership, and positivity have left an indelible mark on Green Phenix. We’re deeply grateful for his years of service — and happy to share that he’ll remain involved from a distance.
Continuing our Core Work
Alongside these changes, our regular activities continue to thrive:
Recycling Hero Campaign: Still going strong, encouraging clean collection via our incentive-based model.
Expanded Collection Network: Strategic partnerships have helped increase access while reducing contamination.
PlasticWise e-learning: Our open-source educational platform continues to attract regional interest.
Beach Cleanups: We’ve stepped up our cleanup efforts — because every piece removed makes a difference.
What’s Next?
In the coming months, we will:
Finalize and launch the I-Care Coin series on the market.
Deepen our regional collaborations.
Develop the PET-to-asphalt pilot as a potential new pathway for island-based material reuse.
Thank you for believing in us and standing beside us through each step of this journey. Your support is not just appreciated — it’s essential. Together, we’re building something beautiful: a Curaçao that is inclusive, circular, and resilient.
Stay connected — and let’s rise together.
With gratitude,
The Green Phenix Team
