World Cleanup Days with Klein College

By Sabine Berendse | Founder

World Cleanup Day 2024 - Day 1
World Cleanup Day 2024 - Day 1

The third week of September is always an important time for Green Phenix. During this week, volunteers from around the world unite to address one of the planet’s most urgent challenges—plastic pollution—through World Cleanup Day. At Green Phenix, beach cleanups have always been central to our mission. The sight of plastic-covered beaches was the driving force behind our founding. While our focus has gradually shifted toward prevention and education, beach cleanups remain a vital aspect of our efforts.

These cleanups offer something special—an opportunity to connect, take collective action, and witness firsthand the immense scale of plastic pollution. There’s nothing quite like joining forces to restore a beach or inlet to its natural state. It’s a hands-on, positive activity that serves as a powerful reminder of why a plastic-free future is so essential.

This year, our World Cleanup Days event will span two days, with some exciting additions to our usual format. On Friday, the two L-VEP classes  from the Miguel Pourier Academy, in collaboration with Green Phenix, will also join the cleanup efforts. The transportation for that day will be sponsored by Fiesta Tours. Then, on Saturday, we’ll continue the tradition of making it a family day, just like every year.

Klein College is a cherished partner. The school is deeply committed to sustainability and recycling. Klein College was one of the first institutions to set up a collection point for recyclables, actively diverting plastic packaging from landfills. Since our inception, Klein College has been a key player in our beach cleanups for World Cleanup Day. Each September, students, teachers, and families come together, bags in hand, ready to rid the shoreline of plastic waste. These vibrant mornings are filled with hope, as people of all ages unite to create a cleaner, healthier environment.

While these cleanups are undeniably fun and uplifting, we never lose sight of the bigger picture. Our goal is not just to clear today’s waste but to work toward a future where such efforts are no longer necessary. Cleanup days are a fantastic way to rally support for this cause. The sight of plastic piling up in otherwise untouched places often shocks participants, sparking a sudden realisation of the gravity of the problem—and motivating them into action.

At Green Phenix, we’re committed to ensuring that future generations won’t have to spend their weekends organising beach cleanups. Our long-term vision is to establish systems that prevent plastic from polluting our beaches and oceans in the first place. Reducing our plastic footprint is crucial, as is driving systemic change in how we manage the plastic we produce. We’ll continue pursuing this vision, and in the meantime, we celebrate every piece of plastic that’s removed from our environment.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supports our mission—whether by participating in a cleanup, making sustainable choices in your everyday life, or contributing financially. Your support helps us continue our work toward a circular and inclusive economy on our beautiful island. Together, we’re not just cleaning up—we’re paving the way for a future where our beaches stay plastic-free for good.
